In the Middle Ages, castles were designed with a large, projecting bay window positioned high atop a tower, solidly jutting out from the castle foundation. This window, called an oriel, gave the leaders a view of the vast environment around them. The advantages gained by this perspective were many: from the oriel, leaders could view the progress of work, design roads, create maps, determine if enemies were attacking, or simply reflect on all of which they were a part.
